Fountain solution additive is the common name for a fountain solution additive. Helps prepare dampening conditions suitable for wet offset printing. However, maintaining the pH alone does not confirm that the solution has the correct composition and is clean.

What does a fountain solution additive do?
A fountain solution additive is more than just an acidity regulator. Depending on the specific product, it facilitates wetting and ensures proper interaction between the fountain solution, the printing plate, and the dampening system. Choose an additive that is compatible with your water, printing press, and specific operating conditions.
Do not replace it with an arbitrary pH-lowering agent; a similar pH reading does not guarantee the same performance during the printing process.
What does the pH of a fountain solution show?
The pH value indicates the acidity or alkalinity of a solution. An environment that is too acidic can hinder the drying of conventional inks. However, do not apply a single, universal pH value to all additives and printing presses.
Follow the recommended dosage range and preparation method specific to each product. Additionally, check the quality and hardness of your water; a solution might show the expected pH level while still containing an incorrect amount of additive or unwanted contaminants.
What does conductivity show?
Conductivity describes the ability of a solution to conduct electricity. It is influenced by dissolved components and temperature. Therefore, changes can help you notice differences in preparation or contamination during operation.
Record the reference point for the fresh solution. Prepare it correctly and perform the measurement in comparable conditions. However, do not directly compare results from two different add-ons.
pH and conductivity: why do you need both measurements?
| Measurement | What helps you evaluate? | What doesn’t it confirm on its own? |
|---|---|---|
| pH | Acidity or alkalinity. | Correct dosage and cleanliness of the entire solution. |
| Conductivity | Changes related to dissolved components. | Type of all impurities and print quality. |
Also take into account the temperature and conditions on the machine. Therefore, evaluate the results together rather than correcting the solution by just one number.
How do you choose a fountain solution additive?
Provide us with your press model, the type of dampening system used, and your water parameters. Include information regarding your use of IPA (isopropyl alcohol) and the types of inks you use. Let us know whether you are looking to reduce alcohol consumption or resolve a specific printing issue.
At WIT, we will help you select the right additive. VARN chemicals offers. Dose it according to the recommendations for the product, not “to achieve pH”. Also check if the color is unstable emulsifying the ink.
