KSL S5 30 anti-set-off powder is a starch-based spray powder for sheets after offset printing.
It separates fresh prints, helping prevent ink transfer to the sheet above. The spacing also lets air reach the ink film.
What does consistent particle size offer?
- Consistent sheet separation: graded particles help maintain a consistent gap between sheets.
- Gentler contact with the print: Soft, rounded particles protect the surface from the potentially harsh effects of the powder.
- Compatibility with the existing powder sprayer: the series also works with electrostatic powder systems.
A reduced proportion of particles below 10 µm lowers dust around the press. It does not mean dust-free operation or eliminate equipment cleaning.
KSL S5 30: which paper suits this grade?
Choose grade 30 primarily for heavier or rougher substrates. Its application range therefore differs from grade 15.
| Matte and uncoated paper with a compact surface | Indicative range: up to 300 g/m² |
|---|---|
| Rough paper, embossed paper, and graphic board | Indicative range: up to 350 g/m² |
| One-side coated board and folding boxboard | Indicative range: up to 400 g/m² |
These recommendations guide initial trials, not every print result. Also consider substrate surface, ink film and planned finishing.

How to adjust powdering when changing jobs
- First check powder-system flow and spray uniformity according to the press manual.
- Select the grain grade based on the substrate, the presence of varnish, and any subsequent finishing processes.
- Run a trial, then check ink set-off and sheet separation in the stack.
- Set the minimum effective amount of powder and re-evaluate the result after adjusting the parameters.
Questions for the press operator before selecting a powder
S5 or S5WL for water-based coating?
S5WL is particularly useful with aqueous coatings because its surface repels water. Standard S5 lacks this surface treatment.
Does the grade number correspond exactly to the particle size in micrometers?
Do not equate a grade number with the exact diameter of every particle. Compare grade, particle distribution and recommended substrates.
Does the “15” variant meet the BG ETEM “low-dust” (low-emission) certification?
No. S5/15 and S5WL/15 are exceptions to the low-dust declaration. Do not advertise them using the declaration for grades 16–45.
Does more powder always solve set-off?
No. First check particle grade, spray uniformity and ink drying conditions. Increasing powder cannot replace correct process adjustment.
Compare Printing powders and available particle size grades. Select the series based on the printing technology used for the job, then choose the specific variant according to the substrate.
