KSL S5WL 30 anti-set-off powder separates freshly printed sheets, especially when applying an aqueous dispersion coating.

The hydrophobic particle surface repels water, helping powder stay on wet coating. This maintains sheet separation and helps prevent blocking.

What are the benefits of the WL variant during varnishing?

• Protection against pile blocking: the water-repellent surface supports sheet separation after aqueous coating.
• A more even delivery pile: improved slip helps stack freshly printed and coated sheets.
• Even powder distribution: a narrow particle-size distribution helps maintain consistent sheet spacing.
• Gentler effect on the print: Soft, rounded particles minimize any aggressive impact on the printed surface.

A reduced proportion of particles below 10 µm lowers dust around the press. It does not mean dust-free operation or eliminate equipment cleaning.

KSL S5WL 30: which paper suits this grade?

Choose grade 30 primarily for heavier or rougher substrates. Its application range therefore differs from grade 15.

These recommendations guide initial trials, not every print result. Also consider substrate surface, ink film and planned finishing.

How to adjust powdering when changing jobs

1. First check powder-system flow and spray uniformity according to the press manual.
2. Select the grain grade based on the substrate, the presence of varnish, and any subsequent finishing processes.
3. Run a trial, then check ink set-off and sheet separation in the stack.
4. Set the minimum effective amount of powder and re-evaluate the result after adjusting the parameters.

Questions for the press operator before selecting a powder

S5 or S5WL for water-based coating?

S5WL is particularly useful with aqueous coatings because its surface repels water. Standard S5 lacks this surface treatment.

Does the grade number correspond exactly to the particle size in micrometers?

Do not equate a grade number with the exact diameter of every particle. Compare grade, particle distribution and recommended substrates.

Does the “15” variant meet the BG ETEM “low-dust” (low-emission) certification?

No. S5/15 and S5WL/15 are exceptions to the low-dust declaration. Do not advertise them using the declaration for grades 16–45.

Does WL replace the water-soluble L3 powder?

No. S5WL repels water but does not dissolve in water or alcohol. For soluble powder during repeated passes, compare sugar-based L3.
